This video shows force vector lines superimposed on the child’s legs. This information is used to assess the alignment of the child’s limb and the forces acting on each joint, at various stages of the gait cycle. Your highly trained gait lab physio will interpret this data and make changes to orthosis/footwear to optimise gait.
WHAT IS A VIDEO
VECTOR GAIT LAB?
A Video Vector Gait Laboratory (aka 2D Gait Lab) consists of two video cameras that record a person walking from the front and side views, that synchronise with measurements from sensitive force plates set in the floor.
When a person walks, the ground applies forces to the body that influence how their joints, muscles, and bones respond. These ground reaction forces are not visible to the human eye. Our 2D gait lab captures and measures them, and allows comparison to ideal movement patterns.
The data provided by the 2D gait lab system enables the orthotist-physiotherapist team to prescribe and fine-tune orthoses and custom footwear with a high degree of precision—helping to optimise each client’s gait pattern and overall mobility.
The outcomes of this process support clients in achieving their goals by:
Promoting a more stable, energy-efficient walking pattern and posture
Ensuring joints, bones and muscles are protected and develop optimally
Minimising pain
Final gait lab reports also provide quantitative data that can be presented to NDIS as evidence/ supporting documentation for future plan goals and funding.

See what the human eye can’t.
Our 2D gait lab measures ground reaction forces in real time—capturing data invisible to observation alone and helping us understand exactly how each child moves.

THE GAIT LAB PHYSIOTHERAPY TEAM
The Gait Lab is located on the premises of Nova Orthotics but is independently operated by highly trained and specialised gait physiotherapists. They work in close collaboration with Nova’s orthotists and the client’s community physiotherapists.
Sarah Tinson
Appointments: Monday & Tuesday
Sarah works collaboratively with Nova’s orthotists to prescribe and fine-tune orthotic and footwear solutions that optimise each client’s functional mobility, posture, stability, and energy efficiency.
She is deeply passionate about early intervention and delivering high-quality care for children with complex gait and orthotic needs. Sarah brings advanced expertise in video vector gait analysis and orthotic/footwear prescription, and has completed both the foundational and advanced OSKAR training with renowned physiotherapist Elaine Owen, most recently undertaking the advanced course in 2022.
With over 15 years of experience as a physiotherapist across paediatric, disability, and rehabilitation settings, Sarah combines clinical depth with personal insight, drawing on her journey as a mother to a beautiful little boy with Cerebral Palsy.
Paula Bailey
Appointments: Fridays
Paula has always been driven to help people move well and feel confident in how they walk. She is passionate about empowering her clients to walk with intention, wander curiously and find their own path - the guiding principles and foundation behind Wanderful Therapy.
Paula graduated from the University of Sydney in 2003 with a degree in Physiotherapy. She started her career working with children at Royal North Shore Hospital, then spent two years in the UK gaining valuable experience in a community paediatric clinic. It was during this time that she first attended OSKAR training with renowned physiotherapist Elaine Owen.
In 2010, Paula returned to Australia and joined the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, where she still works today as both a therapist and clinical educator. Over the years, she’s continued to deepen her skills in gait and AFOs, including completing the advanced OSKAR course in 2022.
